The Room We’ve Been Building

Updated: 5 days ago

The Complecto x Hip Hop Horology meetup was years in the making.

I first came across Hip Hop Horology back in 2024 when it was still a relatively young account. What immediately caught my attention was how naturally it connected two of my favorite things in the world: watches and hip hop.

But it wasn’t surface-level watch spotting.

It wasn’t just reposts of hip hop artists wearing Rolex, AP, and Patek. They went much deeper. There was real respect for the history and craft of hip hop - and real respect for the history and craft of watchmaking. A reverence, even. Both art forms were treated as culture and as legacy — something worth studying and preserving.

Watches from across the full spectrum of horology were highlighted - independents, vintage references, unexpected pieces, and deep cuts. Hip hop from across generations and subgenres was explored with the same enthusiasm. The exploration of this artistic intersection felt intentional, thoughtful, and was just plain dope.

I was curious who was behind it, so I sent a DM.

That one message sparked conversations across time zones, alignment in values, a meeting at Watches and Wonders 2025 and eventually, the room we’ve been building, realized last week in New York.

From NYC to London, that alignment became real in a room with more than 80 people shoulder to shoulder, watches on wrist, stories being shared.

And what a room it was!

From the moment things kicked off, you could feel the vibes. Familiar faces mixing with brand new ones. Longtime collectors alongside people attending their very first watch event ever. That part matters because walking into a watch space for the first time can feel intimidating. Luxury hasn’t always been known for being welcoming or inclusive.

But our room was.

Because Complecto doesn’t do gatekeeping. Breaking down barriers and creating access is fundamental to who we are as a community and platform — and it always will be.

The engagement ran deep. People weren’t just scanning wrists, they were asking questions, sharing context, explaining why the watch on their wrist meant something to them. Music references blended seamlessly into movement and manufacture talk. Grails were passed around next to daily beaters. Independent watchmaking sat comfortably beside vintage icons and G-Shocks. Steel, gold, complications, heirlooms — the watches were as diverse and eclectic as the people wearing them.

Over 80 people in the room, and no two journeys looked the same.

That’s the room we’ve been building.

What connects Complecto and Hip Hop Horology isn’t just a shared interest in watches. It’s a shared belief that watches are entry points into conversations about identity, creativity, craft, and lived experience. The object is just the beginning. The real value is in the exchange.

Culture first. Community always.

Huge gratitude to the founders of Hip Hop Horology (@hiphophorology) — Albert (@allbeem_), Kevin (@ikevinberger), and Liam (@worldwideruckusgram). Their support of Complecto from across the pond has been real from the beginning. For them to travel all the way to NYC to help make this event happen speaks volumes. Moments like this don’t happen by accident.

And this is only the beginning.

To everyone who showed up - especially those attending their first watch event - thank you. You helped shape the energy in that room. The watches were special, but the people made the night.

If you were there, I’d love to hear from you. What were your highlights? Which pieces stuck with you? What conversations are you still thinking about?

Let me know in the comments, and let’s keep building.
